Person-Note* George and Elizabeth Bandy also produced a stillborn female child in 1895.
George, the third son of Thomas and Sarah Bandy, was born in February 1852 at Claremont, Western Australia. He was the first child of the couple to be born in the Swan River Colony as it was known then. He was a small child with curly, auburn hair, and was a source of joy to his parents, as it was first feared that he may have suffered some damage, as his mother had had a bad fall just prior to his birth. However, all was well.
A school had been built in James Street and George attended this school until he was 14. At this time, schools were mainly self supporting. Fees were charged of children whose parents could afford to pay and the teachers received these fees in part payment of salaries. The avowed aim of the Colonial Government was to ensure that the children of the middle and lower classes should gain "on the basis of religion, a sound and serviceable education without any distinction."
The children of those who had brought their English titles and wealth to this new land sometimes attended these schools but, more often than not, received their education in private schools in Perth, and in some cases were sent home to England, especially if university work was to be undertaken. However, the demand for graduates was minimal in the early days of the Colony.
A Board of Education had been formed and suitable teachers were appointed to conduct classes. Emphasis was placed on the three 'R's, as they were termed; that is, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. The standard of success was based on a sound ability in these three areas.
George was a capable pupil and, although he suffered psychologically when his mother left the Colony, he became quite attached to Mrs Holder who looked after both him and his brother Joseph, while their father was at work. They had moved into their William Street home shortly after their arrival in the Colony, and Mrs Holder was renting one of the other two cottages which Thomas had built.
George's marks in his tests were outstanding and he had no difficulty in passing an examination which won him entry into the Post Office at the age of 14. Like his brother, his inclinations lay towards farming, but he was disuaded from this course by his father who felt that greater advantages lay in government employment and security.
Like his father he was keen on military service and joined what would now be termed the Volunteer Defence Force. Military instruction was held three nighta a week at the Military Baracks and George attended these. He also gave up his weekend persuits to attend field exercises whenever they were held. He always kept his neatly pressed red jacket and black trousers. The brass buttons were always highly polished as were his sabre, scabbard and leatherware. Unfortunately, the sabre was returned to the army and the trousers and coat were unpicked and remade into a suit for a fancy dress ball.
When the Boer War broke out, George was keen to go but he was rejected much to his disappointment. In 1876 he married Elizabeth Holder, the youngest daughter of Mrs Holder who, after the sad loss of her first husband, had remarried. George and Elizabeth were married in St John's Anglican Church in West Perth and later, they bought a large block of land in Cowle Street, where they had their lovely brick home built. This home still stands today, although like many more of the homes in the area, it looks a little the worse for wear. The block which he originally purchased has since been subdivided and the original is only a quarter the size and other houses have been built there.
